About

My name is Bailey E. Jensen (the E. stands for Elizabeth), and I am a young artist who works primarily with charcoal — I absolutely adore it!

While I loved to draw in preschool, it wasn’t until I was in middle school that I began drawing seriously by attempting to replicate the illustrations of characters from my favorite books and television shows.

In preschool painting a picture

From there, I explored what my local library had to offer in the way of “How To” drawing books. I began with graphite (a fancy way of saying pencil) and practiced simple still life subjects such as apples and vases. It was only after I discovered a book on drawing animals that I fell in love with having furry and feathery (and sometimes scaly) models. From there my subjects were dogs, cats, pigs, horses, lions, and even a peregrine falcon!

Fast forward to January 2021, and I discovered charcoal after stumbling upon the books by the amazing American author and illustrator, Clare Turlay Newberry. I was amazed by her talent and creativity with charcoal. Her artwork is simply beautiful. The animals she drew appear so soft that any time I read one of her books I am tempted to reach out and pet her characters.

My first official attempt at using charcoal

My relationship with charcoal was love at first sight! It possesses an amazing ability to turn my simple black and white pencil drawings into a deeper, yet softer, and more complex medium of artwork.

You can find my artwork under the “portfolio” and “sketchbook” tabs. You can place a commission order for your very own drawing under the “commissions” tab. I hope you stop and stay awhile, and enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it!
